The Final Draw for the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ was held in Leipzig, Germany on 9 December 2005 before an audience of more than 3,000, among them celebrities from the worlds of sports, politics and culture, with a further 320 million people worldwide following the proceedings on television. By the end of the draw the first 48 matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ had been determined, allowing for the possibility of detailed planning for the first round. As at previous Final Draws, the 32 teams were drawn out of four pots (plus a special, one-team pot for the lowest-ranked European team) to result in as balanced and exciting a tournament as possible. The first pot included the eight seeded teams while the others were determined according to geographic considerations. As a result no team will face more than one other from its own continent in the first round.
The Final Draw was hosted by model Heidi Klum and leading German talk-show host and sports commentator Reinhold Beckmann. Making appearances were a number of football stars, including World Cup legends Roger Milla, Johan Cruyff and Pelé. And if proof was needed that the World Cup far exceeds the realm of sports, it was provided by German President Horst Köhler and Chancellor Angela Merkel, both of whom participated in the event. This diversity of people and genres tied in nicely with the tournament slogan, “A Time to Make Friends," as did the choice of Leipzig, a symbol of reunified Germany, as host city.
