SOUTH AFRICA

The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ took place between 11 June and 11 July 2010. Host country South Africa staged a world class event for the first African FIFA World Cup™.

The diagram below outlines the scale of South Africa compared to the host countries of the previous three FIFA World Cups™.

South Africa built five new football stadiums in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. Another five stadiums underwent extensive upgrading, leaving a legacy of ten state-of-the art stadiums in the country. It is the first time in history that the region owns stadiums dedicated to football. Under the apartheid government, stadiums were built exclusively for rugby and cricket. This is part of the legacy that the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ left in South Africa and for its people. The diagram below identifies the location of the nine host cities.
