The 16 matches were played over a period of 15 days (including six rest days), starting with the Opening Match between South Africa and Iraq on Sunday 14 June at the Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg.

The Final Match was played on Sunday 28 June at the Ellis Park Stadium.

Eight teams competed: the six confederation champions plus 2006 FIFA World Cup™ winners Italy and host country South Africa.

The eight teams were divided into two groups of four. Group A comprised Iraq, New Zealand, South Africa and Spain while Group B featured Brazil, Egypt, Italy and the USA. Each team played three matches in the group phase, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals.

The four cities selected to host the 16 matches were: Mangaung/Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Tshwane/Pretoria and Rustenburg. Access maps and venue plans for the four stadiums can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

The following number of matches were played at each venue: Ellis Park Stadium (Johannesburg) 5 matches; Free State Stadium (Mangaung/Bloemfontein) 4 matches; Royal Bafokeng Stadium (Rustenburg) 4 matches; Loftus Versfeld Stadium (Tshwane/Pretoria) 3 matches.

The Draw for the competition took place in Johannesburg on 22 November 2008.
