The 15th Asian Games Doha 2006 took place between 1-15 December 2006 with DAGBS (Doha Asian Games Broadcast Services), a 50/50 joint venture between HBS and TWI (an IMG Media Company), acting as the Host Broadcaster responsible for the entire multilateral Production Plan and provision of unilateral services to Rights Holders.
The 15th Asian Games were the largest ever, both in terms of investment and the level of competition, with 45 participating countries and regions, over 40 competition venues, 39 sports, some 424 events and more than 10,500 athletes and team officials.
This enormous event required a massive host broadcast operation with DAGBS producing more than 2,000 hours of television coverage, a quality and quantity of broadcast that no Asian Games had witnessed before. For the first time at an Asian Games, a number of sports (Aquatics – Diving, Swimming and Synchronised Swimming, Athletics – Track & Field, Gymnastics as well as the Opening & Closing Ceremonies) were covered in High Definition (HDTV). All events were covered in full digital 16/9 widescreen format with almost 650 cameras assigned to cover the 39 sports.
A significant logistics operation witnessed over 600 tons of broadcast equipment flown into Doha and almost 1,900 DAGBS Games-time staff from 45 countries hired to work on an event with more sports and venues than the Summer Olympic Games and an intense fifteen day competition programme.
A 10,000m2 International Broadcast Centre was designed, constructed, fitted and operated by DAGBS in Doha, a space which included 19 Rights Holders areas, 12 television studios, 2,500m² of multilateral production areas and two satellite farms.
The successful and acclaimed coverage of the 15th Asian Games was viewed across the globe with around 50 countries and regions taking coverage of the Games to an estimated cumulative audience of 1.5 billion viewers.
