FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017
The FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017 was a vital step on the road to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™, allowing HBS to gain valuable experience in delivering a host broadcast in Russia. The event enabled HBS’ to perfect the hybrid UHD/ HDR/1080p set-up that would be expanded across all 64 matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™. For the very first time, a single production chain would deliver multiple formats (UHD, 1080p and 1080i) at a major football tournament, with the use of 1080p and HDR improving the image quality for all rights holders regardless of the delivery format.
HBS was also able to test immersive audio, which would be a major component of the production of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™. Elsewhere, an enhanced multimedia production plan introduced Virtual Reality (VR) coverage to audiences, while the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) concept was first tested as well – both on the field of play and in the way in which TV covered such incidents and explained the procedure to viewers.
