On 3 February 2006, in rather freezing conditions in Amiens’ Licorne stadium, a team of blue-coated men and women busied themselves around the pitch intent on making "T5" a highly successful "World Cup standard" HD test.

Director François Lanaud (left) monitors the proceedings.

As HBS will be delivering several innovations at the FIFA World Cup Germany™ later this year, the company decided to fully test all technical and operational aspects of the HD set-up to be implemented this summer: the HD cameras at pitch level, the OB vans designed to HBS specifications, the EVS equipment working in full HD configuration, the new clip compilation channel being pioneered by HBS.

The objective was to establish and develop workflows for all the different feeds that will be delivered in Germany at the 12 host venues and relayed to the International Broadcast Centre in Munich. Test 5 focused mainly upon venue operations and saw the HBS venue and production teams working side by side, implementing on site.

Tough winter conditions for the HBS crews.

Twenty-five HD cameras – the number to be used at each of the 64 matches of the competition – were manned by a full "Dream Team" – 42 strong – headed by their French World Cup Director, François Lanaud, at the control panel of the OB van that he will actually be using at the FIFA World Cup™. Another thirty-five technical staff members supported the "Dream Team" on site.

Graphics provider Delta Tre contributed to the test.

Every feed produced in Amiens was recorded on hard disk and on tape in preparation for the next two tests scheduled soon. At the next test, at the end of March, these tapes will be used to simulate the feeds of an EBIF Show coming live into the IBC Production Centre in order to fully test the workflows to be used in a few months’ time. In addition, Slo-mos and real time shots were also used successfully to test the clip compilation channel workflow and technology.

"We are delighted with all of the testing so far," said Peter Angell, HBS Director of Production, after the match. "I consider Test 5 to be a key milestone insofar as it is the first time that all the HD equipment has been assembled and used together in full HD World Cup configuration and we are 100% satisfied with the performance of all the equipment and staff."
