SUCCESSFUL SEA GAMES MISSION IN SINGAPORE
The 28th SEA Games in Singapore has concluded with all parties involved in the host broadcast elated at the positive feedback received for the project.
HBS, working in collaboration with Host Broadcaster MediaCorp as HB Production Partner, had the objective of delivering an international standard broadcast in order to raise the profile of the Games and the response from Rights Holding Broadcasters (RHBs) confirms a ‘best ever’ coverage has been achieved.
“The scope was both very simple and very ambitious: make sure that the 28th SEA Games would become the new landmark for sports events in South East Asia by delivering the best coverage ever,” explained Project Director Daniel Wlochovski. “By doing just that, we would contribute to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Singapore’s independence by producing the memorable sporting event the jubilee deserved. Thanks to the close cooperation we forged with MediaCorp, and greatly helped by the magnificent sports facilities operated by Sport Singapore, I trust that we reached our target to the satisfaction of all the stakeholders.”
Feeds from nine of the competition venues relayed live footage of 14 SEA Games disciplines, while Production Pool members catered for another five sports and four ENG crews captured the important moments from the remaining sports. Meanwhile, an International Broadcast Centre (IBC) provided working space for ten RHBs – with the largest premises measuring 120 m2.
The encouraging words did not just come from broadcasters. MediaCorp – Host Broadcaster and RHB – reported high ratings from their role as domestic broadcaster. “We have had unbelievable ratings in terms of the number of Singaporeans watching the Games. While, in part, that was because we won a lot of medals, it was also because the coverage was excellent. It was an enjoyable experience to watch the Games, that is what we wanted and the audiences justified our decision to aim for higher production standards,” Remesh Kumar, Senior Vice President – English Entertainment Productions, confirmed.
HBS believes its best-ever coverage goal will lay down a marker for what is expected of a major sports event broadcast in the region, along with setting a big challenge for future events such as the 2017 SEA Games in Malaysia and the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia. Legacy is a key factor of HBS’s involvement in the 28th SEA Games, and not just for local stakeholders. “Our message to future Games hosts is don’t underestimate the difficulties, they are real, but don’t worry as we can help and train you,” Wlochovski added. “Then maybe once we have done it together, the following time you can do it on your own. That’s the legacy.”
